Voice lessons: who, how and why.

Students come to voice lessons for many reasons: to improve intonation, get help with specific songs, gain confidence in their solo performance, and some come just to improve their voice through regular instruction.

The advantage of private lessons is they are tailored to the student’s abilities and interests.
We work on your individual vocal needs by developing capable vocal technique....breathing, releasing the sound, getting an efficient, effective sound and extending the range where necessary.

Students ages 11-18 generally schedule 30 minute lessons. Students age 16 through adult may choose between 30, 45 and 60-minute lessons. Just as for any other instrument, weekly lessons are essential. If a students really is motivated to train their voice, a regular lesson time and regular home practice is necessary to hear and feel results.

Having goals for voice lessons is also helpful...i.e. auditioning for musicals, college auditions or participating in school or community choirs and singing contests.
Having goals helps keep the student focused on learning how the voice works and what their voice needs help with.

I teach classical as well as contemporary styles. Styles of singing range from folk, rock, gospel, Broadway, choral and classical, and students range in age and ability. The foundation of good singing is the same for all styles. I do not try to teach everyone, I prefer to teach people who really want to learn.

Students may bring material they wish to work on, or I can recommend music that would be appropriate for their voice type.
New students may start at any time during the year. Tuition payments are made per term (usually 10-12 weeks long).

I also work as a voice coach. There are times when a student just needs help with a particular song, to prepare for an audition or performance. A vocal coach works through the trouble spots, prepares the student for each aspect of an audition or helps rehearse the performance. Voice coaching can be done in your home, at your rehearsal space, or at my studio. Coaching prices are determined on an individual basis.
